Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with both antioxidant and senolytic properties. As a senolytic, it selectively induces apoptosis in senescent cells — cells that stop dividing but secrete inflammatory signals (the SASP — senescence-associated secretory phenotype). The Mayo Clinic senolytic protocol uses quercetin + dasatinib (or quercetin alone) in pulsed cycles rather than daily dosing. It also stabilizes mast cells, reducing histamine and allergy responses.
GI upset at high doses
Headache
Kidney strain at very high doses (>3 g/day)
Theoretical thyroid interference at very high doses
Generally well tolerated at 500–1000 mg/day
Taking without bromelain or piperine — quercetin bioavailability alone is poor; these absorption enhancers significantly increase uptake; they're not optional
Daily dosing when the pulsed senolytic protocol produces the clinical effect — 3 days on, 4 weeks off is the Mayo Clinic-inspired protocol for clearing senescent cells
Expecting rapid anti-aging results without lifestyle changes — senolytics clear damaged cells; replacing them with new damaged cells defeats the purpose
Antibiotics (quinolones particularly) — may reduce effectiveness of certain antibiotics; separate by 2+ hours
CYP3A4 substrates — quercetin inhibits this enzyme; check drug interactions for affected medications
Thyroid medications — theoretical interference at very high doses (>3 g/day); relevant at standard doses only if pre-existing thyroid sensitivity
Quercetin is the most accessible senolytic — it clears senescent 'zombie cells' that secrete chronic inflammatory signals driving biological aging. For senolytic effect, use the pulsed protocol (1,000 mg/day for 3 consecutive days per month) rather than daily use. Always take with bromelain or piperine — bioavailability without them is poor.
